Abbaye aux Hommes

Recommended
This 11C architectural masterpiece boasts elegant lines which combine Romanesque aesthetics, Gothic exuberance, and the Classicism of 18C monastic buildings. The church of Saint-Étienne was founded by William the Conqueror. The facade is striking for its sobriety, which counterbalances the soaring twin towers. Inside, the immense nave with its rounded arches is remarkable for its lack of ornamentation. The monastic buildings (now the town hall) have retained their attractive woodwork.
