Laid out around its church, where the dangling effigy of soldier John Steele remains in place, this pleasant village is one of the most famous places on the Atlantic coast. It seemed that nothing would ever trouble the village until the night of 5/6 June 1944, when the first US Airborne forces parachuted in to support the Utah Beach landings, a historical episode comprehensively explained in the Airborne museum.
