Renard Slag Heap

The landscape of the Nord region is naturally flat but modified somewhat by slag heaps, some as much as 100m high. Since they fell into disuse, they have been developed in other ways: trees have been planted or sports equipment installed so that people can go for walks or ride mountain bikes. Trees have grown on some and St-John's Wort, cherry trees or orchids have sprouted on others. The Renard slag heap in Denain was the first to have its biotope protected by an official administrative order.
