Valenciennes
The Essential
This town has always cultivated a taste for the arts... to the point of earning the nickname the Athens of the Nord. It also boasts another forte: a dish called Lucullus, smoked beef tongue, sliced and covered with foie gras! Valenciennes is a dynamic place and its old roads and buildings are gradually being renovated. Its university, a tramway and new industries enable it to rise to the occasion of being the second largest urban area in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region.
