La Roche-sur-Yon
La Roche-sur-Yon The Essential
A town, with a chequered layout, established by Napoleon I. Vendée needed a safe city in order to guard against any further troubles. In 1804, Napoleon chose this site and had the plans drawn up by a military engineer, Duvivier, hence the military severity of today's chequered layout. Baptised "Napoléon-Vendée" when it was founded, it finally took back its original name in 1870 after many trials and tribulations.
