Castle of Château-Thierry

St John's Gate (Porte St-Jean, 14C) leads to the remnants of this old military city, which was knocked down leaving only the bases of the walls. It is now an attractive walk affording pleasant views over the town, the Marne Valley and the Cote 204 Monument. On the Bouillon Tower, a layout sculpted on stone shows the former château with its surrounding wall, towers and keep. Digs have unearthed what used to be the remarkably large kitchens, dating from the 14C and 15C.
