La Rochelle The Essential
This is a wonderful port which has a quality of light that charmed painters, the Impressionists in particular. It is a fiercely Protestant place which, as a result, suffered a terrible siege at the hands of Richelieu in 1627. It became rich from its trade with the Americas. It is also one of the few towns in France to have decreed the bicycle king.
