La Rochelle Town Hall

Interesting
The town hall was badly damaged by the fire of 28 June 2013, especially the Renaissance part, but the works of art and listed furnishings were relatively unscathed. This composite building is worthy of note for its rich decorations. The courtyard is defended by a Gothic surrounding wall topped by a machicolated wall-walk, and reinforced by a belfry-tower. The main façade of the building was built in the Italian style under Henri IV. The rear façade looks over the Rue des Gentilshommes, the same name given to the gate through which aldermen left at the end of their term, after which they were known as gentlemen.
