Niort The Essential
Interesting
Peaceful and nonchalant, the green waters of the Sèvre Niortaise flow through the city, the image of prosperity and well-heeled charm with its abundance of flowers during the spring and summer. The birthplace of the future Madame de Maintenon, Niort used to specialise in tannery and chamois leather. Today, these two activities have declined and the town is now home to some of the largest insurance companies in France.
