Thouars The Essential

The Thouet River flows gently along the rocky promontory on which the town of Thouars is built. This former military town, once favoured by the rich and powerful, has preserved its superb castle from that period, now a secondary school. Strolling through the charming medieval streets is a great way to explore this lively town where the half-timbered houses, vestiges of the former surrounding walls, the Church of St-Médard with its fine Poitevin façade, and other religious buildings form a stylish and welcoming setting.
