St Michel Abbey Church, Nantua

Interesting
This abbey, Cluny's so-called big sister, is the most important in the Ain. Overlooked by a finely worked 19C bell tower, it houses the vestiges of a Benedictine abbey (12C) destroyed during the Revolution. Inside lie gems such as the Chapelle Sainte-Anne (16C), which has a Renaissance vault embellished with a superb network of arcatures; the altar in the chancel; the magnificent St Sebastian by Eugène Delacroix and the pillars in the nave, which flare out to form a basket-handle vault! This curious detail was no doubt brought about by an unplanned broadening of the vault.
