St-Apollinaire's Cathedral looms over this town founded in 2C BC. Boulevards surround a maze of picturesque streets. It is built over a series of terraces, which slope down towards the Rhone River, the generator of its progress and prosperity. Since 1452, the town has been the cradle of the university where such prestigious professors such as Cujas, had taught outstanding students like François Rabelais. Valence, an important fruit and vegetable market has diversified its activity.
