St-Wandrille Abbey

Interesting
The estate of St-Wandrille Abbey stretches from the small valley of Fontenelle, over the concave part of one of the Seine's river band (right bank) which runs along Port-Jumièges up to Vieux-Port, making its way through the Brotonne Forest (left bank). Brotonne Bridge (1 km away) makes access from the opposite bank much easier. The village has grown at the gates of the monastery. Beautiful houses are grouped by the parish church. The monastery became the centre of the most vigorous developments of «Benedictine blossoming» which spread out in Normandy in the 11C. After the monastery's decline following the Religion War, the influence was felt again with Saint Maur's reform up to the Revolution, which brought about the monks' dispersion and the downfall of the monastery. In the 19C, the estate belonged to a mill owner and then to an English lord. The Benedictines returned in 1894 but once again dispersed seven years later. The writer Maurice Maeterlinck lived here for several years. In 1931, the Gregorian chant, renewed by Dom Pothier, resounded once again under the arches.
