Maulbronn The Essential
Situated in the Salzach valley, the Abbey of Maulbronn, with its rampart walk, recalls a small fortified town of the Middle Ages. Founded in 1147, this is one of the best preserved medieval monasteries north of the Alps. The monastery had an important influence on the spread of Gothic architecture in central and northern Europe, and had no Baroque elements added at a later date. The school established here since the Reformation (1556) has nurtured the talents of such illustrious men as Hermann Hesse, Johannes Kepler and Friedrich Hölderlin.
