Weltenburg Abbey stands in a majestic setting on the banks of the Danube, just where the river begins to open out. The church (1718) is divided into an outer nave and a principal nave, both oval in form. The eye is drawn to the statue of St George (principal altarpiece), which is lit up in a dramatic fashion. Through the orifice in the cupola can be seen the upper calotte, a composition in trompe l'oeil of the Church Triumphant.
