Situated on Spree island since the 15C, the Royal Palace was the residence of the Hohenzollern until the fall of the monarchy. The palace was destroyed by the East German government in 1950. After the reunification of Germany it was decided to rebuild the palace on the site of the Palast der Republik in Schlossplatz.
