Hamburger Kunsthalle

Recommended
As well as sections on the Middle Ages (see the altarpiece by Master Bertram) and the 17C Dutch collection (Rembrandt, Jan Steel), the museum's main attraction is German painting from the 19C, by Caspar David Friedrich, in particular. The modern era includes works by artists of the Brücke and Blaue Reiter. In the contemporary art gallery, devoted to art since the 1960s, Germany is well represented (Richter, Beuys).
