Old Town

This district on the banks of the Rhine with its taverns is said to be «the largest counter in Europe». Here you can see the «Radschläger» (waiters who cartwheel for a bit of money). In the Bolkerstrasse is the house where Heine was born. This pedestrian road is indissociable from the history of the tailor Wibbe. He attended his own funeral after having changed identity to escape prison. The Schneider-Wibbel-Gasse chimes recall this popular anecdote.
