The Loreley

Recommended
This legendary rock has become the symbol of the Romantic Rhine and enjoys a special place in German literature. According to legend, Lorelei was a blond-haired undine (sort of water nymph from Scandinavian mythology) who lured boatsmen with her song into the most dangerous stretch of the river. Heine turned this legend into a famous poem "I know not whence cometh my sadness", set to music by Silcher.
