The focal point of this fine museum, located in a Baroque edifice, is the exhibition of medieval art from Thuringia, which includes some superb altarpieces and a Pietà by the Master of St Severinus' sarcophagus (church of St Severinus). In the gallery, works by 18C and 19C German landscape artists are displayed. The museum's prize piece is however the mural by Erich Heckel, painter and cofounder of the Expressionist Die Brücke movement.
