Weimar The Essential
Recommended
Weimar is the undisputed "capital of German classicism". The whole city evokes the memory of its past geniuses: in this city Cranach painted his last major work, Bach was chapel master, Liszt directed the opera, Nietzsche ended his days, and Goethe lived for more than twenty years. The town has retained a provincial charm which adds to its attraction, with narrow streets lined with colourful houses, the town hall square and a castle surrounded by landscaped gardens.
