Ano Syros

The Catholic stronghold of Ermoupoli and the Cyclades, the medieval city of Ano Syros, with its steep narrow streets, is made up of whitewashed houses, alleyways, little squares and tiny gardens. Visit the small Markos Vamvakaris museum, dedicated to one of the masters of the rebetika. Atop the hill, the Agios Georgios Cathedral, built in 1598 on the site of a church that was destroyed several times by the Turks, is the counterpart of the Orthodox cathedral, Agios Nikolaos.
