Upon entering Kythira, capital of the island of Cythera, you are dazzled by the whiteness of the walls, set off wonderfully by architectural detailing of Venetian origin. The main street leads to a rocky spur crowned by a citadel (early 16C). Its ramparts afford a superb view of the twin bay of Kapsali. Inside are four Byzantine churches. Others in the Mesa Vourgo district contain frescoes dating from the 15C to 18C.
