Monastery of Ósios Loukás
Built at the edge of a majestic cirque surrounded by mountains, Hosios Loukas is in a suitably grand setting. This Byzantine monastery is among the most beautiful in Greece, as much in terms of its original architecture and its fabulous mosaics on gold backgrounds, as its frescoes, icons and polychrome marble pavements. Founded in the 11C, Hosios Loukas stands on the spot where 150 years earlier the local hermit, Luke of Steiris, had erected a small oratory.
