Wedged between the sea and a lagoon, Lefkada, capital of the island of Lefkada (Leucas), has the old-fashioned charm of a provincial town. The time to explore it is at nightfall, when the façades of its colourful houses soften in the glow of the street-lamps, and the crowds - which disappear during the afternoon - return, breathing life back into the paved alleys of the Venetian-style harbour. The many charming little churches built by prominent local families, with Classical façades, single naves and painted ceilings, are also Venetian inspired.
