Esztergom The Essential

Built on the flanks of two hills, this town in northern Hungary keeps watch over the Danube flowing below. A royal abode from the 11C to the 13C and a leading centre of Hungarian Catholicism, Esztergom still enjoys a certain importance today and is the headquarters of the primate archbishop of Hungary. The town abounds in monuments, a tour of which will reveal that it was here that Steven, the first king of Hungary, was crowned in 1001.
