Pécs The Essential
Highly recommended
Pécs was a prestigious town in the Middle Ages thanks to its bishops, one of whom was the famous Janus Pannonius. The very first university in Hungary was set up here in 1367. The Ottoman period (1453-1686) was brilliant, with the Turks contributing to the town's cultural development and building many mosques. After a long period of neglect, Pécs slowly came back to life and is a popular place today with its sparkling wine, Mediterranean atmosphere and art museums.
