Cavan The Essential
Main town of the county that bears the same name, Cavan is to be found nestling peacefully in the undulating and wooded countryside that is dotted with infinite little lakes ideal for fishing and boating. The biggest lake in the county, Lake Oughter, fed by the River Erne, is nearby. The Roman Catholic cathedral, with its various architectural styles and sculptures by Albert Power, was built in 1942 by Ralph Byrne near the town's northern gate . To the south, the Anglican church, without aisles but endowed with a gallery, crenellations, a tower and a steeple, was designed by John Bowden, as was the Classical Courthouse opposite.
