Skibbereen The Essential
This lively market town owes its existence to the acts of Barbary Coast pirates who attacked the neighbouring village of Baltimore in 1631. Some of the English colonists were captured, but the survivors fled inland and created two new settlements, known as Bridgetown and Stapleton, which together grew into Skibbereen. The town suffered severely from the 19C famine, but today Skibbereen enjoys prosperity.
