Galway The Essential
County town of Galway, this town is also the largest conurbation in the west of Ireland. Its location at the mouth of the Corrib at the end of Galway Bay makes it an ideal port. The original docks on the east bank of the river now extend towards the south-east. The cathedral, spiritual centre of the city, and university town - which is home to many modern industries - have sprung up around the medieval heart of narrow streets.
