Loughrea The Essential
This small city on the north bank of Lake Rea faces the Slieve Aughty Mountains. It grew from a Norman fortress and a Carmelite priory, built around 1300 by Richard de Burgo and now in ruins. General Saint-Ruth, killed at the battle of Aughim, apparently was buried under the priory tower. A section of one of the doors of the medieval city is still standing, on the edge of the cathedral close.
