Tuam The Essential
With its two cathedrals, the tiny city of Tuam is the religious capital of Connaught. In 1049 the O'Connor Kings of Connaught made it their headquarters. In the 12C, when Turloch and then Rory O'Connor were high kings of Ireland, the town became the de facto capital of the whole country. James I granted Tuam a charter in 1613 and the city was laid out to its present plan with all the streets converging on the central diamond.
