Ballyshannon The Essential
This town, standing on a hill, guards an important crossing point over the River Erne. In 1613, it was created a Borough by Royal Charter. In 1597, the English, under the command of Sir Conyers Clifford, were defeated by Red Hugh O'Donnell. It is the home town of William Allingham (1824-1889), born on the Mall and buried at the foot of the hill in the cemetery of Saint Anne's Church. It was also the birthplace of Speaker Conolly, the son of a local publican.
