Athy The Essential
This pretty little town on the River Barrow, was for many years owned by the Fitzgeralds, dukes of Leicester. In the early Middle Ages it was the biggest town in the county of Kildare, clustered around a fortified crossing over the Barrow, where it joins the Barrow Line, the southern branch of the Grand Canal. The area offers pleasant walks along the banks and ideal spots for trout fishing.
