Limerick The Essential
Recommended
Situated on the River Shannon, Limerick, the fourth largest city in Ireland, is the administrative and commercial heart of the mid-west. The historic centre, known as English Town or King's Island, with its numerous examples of medieval architecture, stands on the north bank of the River Abbey, a tributary of the Shannon. The district known as Irish Town has developed on the south bank. Eamon De Valera (1882-1975), former president of the Republic, was a native of Limerick.
