Longford The Essential
The county town of Longford is set on the River Camlin, a few kilometres east of the point where it meets the River Shannon. Longford owes its existence to a fortress (longphort) built by the O'Farrels. The last battle of the 1798 Rebellion was fought at Ballinamuck (16km north), where General Lake's English army successfully fought the French and the Irish Volunteers, under General Humbert.
