Main port of the Boyne Estuary, with its nearby valley steeped in history, Drogheda is just a short distance from the extensive beaches of Bettystown and the beautiful coastline to the North. The town was founded in 911 by the Dane, Thorgestr. Little is left of the many monasteries that flourished in Drogheda in the Middle Ages. The nave and tower are all that remain of St Mary's Abbey. In 1649, when the town was taken by Cromwell's men, 2000 people were massacred.
