It is a quite ancient town - its original charter was granted in 1317 - and is situated on the south bank of the River Slaney where it drains into Wexford Harbour. The historic centre is a maze of narrow streets and alleys. The town has a lively cultural tradition and is known internationally for an annual opera festival.
