Martina Franca The Essential
This white town stands on a hilltop in the Murge hills. The old town, surrounded by ramparts, is a jewel of Baroque architecture. Piazza Roma is bordered by the former Palazzo Ducale (now the town hall), which was built in 1668. Take the monumental staircase to the first floor, which is adorned with beautiful 18C frescoes. Follow Via Cavour and Via Mazzini, lined with Baroque palazzi, to the imposing San Martino cathedral. Dating from 1773, the main altar is flanked by two marble statues.
