This Calabrian town was home to Milo of Crotone, a renowned athlete who was much admired by Virgil. In the 6C BC, Pythagorus founded several communities of mathematicians here, which gradually became too powerful for the local rulers and were expelled to Metaponto. Annexed by Rome after the Second Punic War, Crotone is now a busy industrial port and a popular seaside resort.
