Ercolano The Essential

Founded, according to tradition, by Hercules, in AD79 this town was a peaceful fishing port, inhabited by craftsmen and wealthy patricians who were attracted here by the superb Bay of Naples. Then came the terrible eruption and mudslide which, in an instant, completely engulfed the town in mud, down to every last nook, causing death and devastation. The mud solidified into a hard shell, preserving the timber structures which in Pompeii were consumed by fire, thus providing a moving testimony of daily life suddenly cut short.
