Aquileia The Essential
According to legend, an eagle (aquila) crossed the sky on the day that this former Roman settlement was founded in 181 BC. The town became a flourishing market town and was used as a headquarters by Augustus during his struggle against the Germanic tribes. From 554 to 1751, Aquileia was one of the most important ecclesiastical patriarchates in Italy. It has become a Unesco world heritage site due to its amazing mosaics.
