When to go

Quand partir:

Just 28km/17mi from the sea, Rome enjoys a relatively mild climate all year round, but it is in May, June and September that the temperatures are the most pleasant. A few rainy showers can take place in spring. At Easter, don’t miss the Pope’s urbi and orbi blessing on Saint Peter’s Square.
In summer, the thermometer rarely drops below 30°C/85°F and the air can be stifling. The city is deserted by many of its inhabitants, and in August, some sites and many restaurants are closed.
At this time, Rome may well seem calmer and less polluted!
Finally, the winters are generally quite mild, although the occasional cold spell can occur and November is often very rainy. From December to Epiphany (6 January), the cheerful, festive spirit of Christmas invades the city, particularly the Piazza Navona market and nativity scenes adorn all the churches. Ideal to try the capital’s famous cafés.
