Piazza San Carlo

Highly recommended
An example of harmony, this square is a beautiful example of urban planning. The churches of San Carlo and Santa Cristina stand on the Via Roma. To the east is the Philharmonic Academy (17C). In the centre is the famous "caval d'bronz", an equestrian monument by Marocchetti (1838) in honour of Emmanuele Filiberto, who defeated the French at Saint Quentin in 1557. Beneath the arcades, two historic cafés (the San Carlo and the Torino) vie to outdo each other in elegance and splendour.
