Caltanissetta
Caltanissetta The Essential
Caltanissetta stands on a plateau in the heart of Sicily, at an altitude of 568m. Like the rest of the island, this small town, founded by the Greeks, experienced numerous cultural influences. However, its golden age was as recent as the early 20C, when four-fifths of the world's sulphur production was mined here. Today, the mines have all closed but the town is still the scene of extraordinary religious feasts and processions during Holy Week.
