Naxos

Naxos was built in the 4C BC over the foundations of the Ancient town founded in the 7C and 6C BC. The town retained the fortifications and the tenemos (sacred enclosure) from the earlier settlement and was laid out in a regular street pattern in accordance with the ideas of Hippodamos. The network of main streets (plateias A, B and C) ran east to west, crossed at right angles by smaller streets known as stenopos.
