Pitigliano The Essential
Interesting
Pitigliano stands in an impressive and picturesque site on a spur of volcanic rock high above the confluence of two rivers, the Lente and Meleta. An Etruscan settlement before being colonised by the Romans, the town was once known as "Little Jerusalem" because of the large Jewish community it housed until the late 19C. A synagogue and an oven for baking unleavened bread from this period can still be seen in the town today.
