Pietrasanta The Essential
Interesting
Situated near Camaiore, Pietrasanta was founded in 1255 as an outpost for Lucca, in an attempt to protect the latter from the sea. The town's original rectangular layout, reminiscent of a Roman encampment, is still clearly visible. The town is now a centre of contemporary sculpture, thanks to the marble of Versilia and its skilled local craftsmen which have attracted artists from all over the world, including César, Miro, Henry Moore and the Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero.
