Anykšciai The Essential
The inspiration for several writers, this little city has a special place in the hearts of all Lithuanians, who come here to visit its memorial-museums and to enjoy the region's pine forests and lakes. On the main square, a row of little coloured houses hide a wood-built district. The neo-Gothic church of St Matthew (1909 and 1928) has two soaring bell towers (84m high). Don't miss the Rail museum, offering excursions to Rubikiai and its charming lake with 19 low-lying islands.
