Slot Loevestein (Loevestein castle)

Interesting
The slate roofs of this red brick fortress flanked by four square towers rise in solitary state out of the greenery. The castle (1357-1368) was surrounded by a perimeter wall from 1385 and in the 15C, it was made into a prison. Grotius was incarcerated there in 1619 and wrote his legal and theological works there before managing to escape in a box which had been used to bring him his books. You can the famous box during the visit. The great halls of the castle have attractive chimneys.
